Businesses across East Cambridgeshire are warned to be extra vigilant following a spate of thefts of air conditioning units.

Over the last week air conditioning units have been stolen in five separate incidents from Bartholomew’s Walk in Ely, costing local businesses in excess of £60,000.

Police have been notified and are increasing the number of patrols in the area.

The Community Safety Partnership, which includes representatives from the police, East Cambridgeshire District Council, and the Federation of Small Businesses are also working together to help notify businesses of the risks.

Cllr Lis Every, who chairs the Community Safety Partnership, said: “These thefts are causing a huge impact on businesses. One company has had nine retail units stolen, forcing it to use expensive temporary heating at a time when business costs are high.

“We are encouraging businesses in the area to be extra vigilant at the moment and report any suspicious activity to police by dialling 101 or CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Businesses are also being advised to check their security and install CCTV and alarms where appropriate. For more information on how to keep businesses safe visit www.eastcambs.gov.uk/content/safer-business-safer-streets
