This month, residents, clubs and local organisations are being invited to have their say on the early designs for the district’s new leisure centre.

The new facility which will form part of the leisure village on the A10 near Ely aims to meet most of the demand for leisure facilities in East Cambridgeshire for  the next 25 years.

From Tuesday 26 May to Saturday 30 May, exhibitions will be put in three leisure centres across the district: Paradise Pool in Ely, Ross Peers in Soham and Littleport Leisure centre. The architects and project team will also be in Ely library on Saturday 30 May from 9am to 2pm for people to come and talk to.

The exhibitions will explain what the new leisure centre will contain, how it might look and the current timetable for the project.

People will be asked their views on what they think about the proposals; which parts of the centre’s facilities are most important/attractive to them and suggestions of what they think could improve the plans further.

Councillor Richard Hobbs, Chairman of Commercial Services Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “East Cambridgeshire is growing – businesses are moving to the district, our population is expanding and the demand for services is increasing. This is why we are pushing forward with delivering a new leisure centre to meet the needs of our residents across the district - not just now but for many years into the future.

“We are challenging ourselves to deliver a leisure centre for the District which is the best it can be. With work underway to develop a concept design, we want early feedback from residents, sports clubs and organisations about the plans before we move on to completing more detailed design work. It is important you give us your thoughts now to make sure the plans we develop are shaped by the people who will use the new centre.”

In November 2014, the Council agreed the mix of facilities which the leisure centre would have to address the existing gaps in provision, meet future demands; and be cost effective to operate. These are:

•      an eight lane 25m Pool
•      a learner Pool
•      a Health & Fitness Suite (120 stations)
•      Two Activity Studios
•      a four Court Sports Hall
•      a Full Size Artificial Grass Pitch.
