Disposing of Asbestos
Since 16th July 2004 all types of asbestos has been classed as a hazardous and controlled waste.
Only Environment Agency registered companies and carriers are allowed by law to handle, transport and dispose of any types of asbestos.
A consignment note, issued by the Environment Agency, must accompany every shipment of asbestos, no matter how small.
How and Where can I get rid of asbestos?
Householders wishing to dispose of asbestos should contact Customer Services on 01353 665555. The following procedure must be adhered to.
The householder must visit the Council office with proof of residency e.g. a household utility bill or council tax bill, the council officer will ask you some questions about the waste to confirm it is asbestos from a household source.
The information provided will be recorded and forwarded to the AmeyCespa Waste Management Park at Waterbeach and must include the following:
- The quantity of asbestos for disposal
- The nature of the asbestos (sheet etc)
- The householders full name and address
- The transport method used
- The number and size of the special bags required
- How many trips will be made
The householder is required to bag up the asbestos, without breaking it up, and seal each bag. you are then required to take the waste to the AmeyCespa Waste Management Park off the A10 at Waterbeach (please call prior to delivery on 01223 861856) reporting to the weighbridge before depositing your asbestos, taking any spare bags with you.
The weighbridge operator will record your details and the authorisation code issued by the Council, they will then supervise the unloading of the asbestos waste and issue you with a receipt.
Any bags without an authorisation code will be rejected.
