Grants & Loans
Grants and/or loans maybe available to enable you to carry out:
- Essential works to your property, such as repairs to a leaking roof or replacement of rotten windows.
- To provide adaptation or improvement to enable a disabled person to remain in their own home and continue to live as independently as possible.
- To provide energy efficiency measures.
Grants and loans are means tested therefore providing help to those most in need.
Does the Council provide financial help for disabled adaptions and/or housing repairs and how much could I receive?
The District Council is able to offer assistance for Mandatory Disabled Adaptations up to a maximum of £30,000. You would be subject to a test of resources. Some people receive a grant to pay for the full cost of the adaptation, but others do have to make a contribution towards the cost of the works. The level of contribution depends on your income and savings.
If the disabled adaptation works required are over £30,000 then discretionary funding in the form of a loan may also be available. This would be an interest free deferred payment loan, up to a maximum level of £20,000, for works deemed reasonable, necessary and practicable by the Local Authority.
The Council may also be able to help you if you are not disabled but are in need of assistance in maintaining or improving your own home. In the first instance you are advised to read the Private Sector Housing Renewal Policy Second Review, June 2006 document (available for download at the bottom of this page) Please note this is currently under review and will be updated shortly, which explains how the local Authority supports local people to help provide wide ranging assistance for housing renewal. Depending on the level of work needed and your individual financial circumstances this assistance may be in the form of a grant or an interest free, deferred payment loan. If you are over 60 or on a low income then please contact us directly or you may wish to contact Care and Repair for further information as to what may be available.
If you have a general enquiry about the assistance available, for example you are thinking of buying an empty property in nee of repairs or are a landlord wishing to convert or improve a property, then please contact the Environmental Services, Domestic Team at the Council who will be pleased to advise you.
How do I know if I will qualify for any assistance towards home improvements or adaptions?
In the first instance please refer to the Private Sector Housing Renewal Policy or contact the Environmental Services, Domestic Team at the District Council for further advice.

If I qualify for a grant/loan does the Council employ the builders?
No, the builders work is a contract between yourself and the builder.
For the grant to be approved the Council will require at least two estimates. The amount of grant approved will be based on the cheapest estimate.
If I qualify for a grant/loan can I get help to choose a builder?
The Council does have a list of local builders who have carried out grant work before.
If you need someone to oversee the work, Care & Repair can provide this service.
