How to Make an Application on Protected Trees
Anyone wishing to carry out work on protected trees must apply to the Council in writing via a planning application form, giving 6 weeks notice of their intentions. During that period the Council may allow the work to proceed or make a TPO to protect the tree. Please use one of the methods below to make an application to the Council.
A number of amendments to the Tree Preservation Order Regulations were introduced from the 1st October 2008. As a result of these changes, all applications for works to protected trees have to be made on a standard government application form. This form is mandatory and should be used when applying to undertake works to trees, which are subject to a Tree Preservations Order and for notification of works to trees situated in a Conservation Area.
A fast track appeals process has also been introduced - under this new system the Planning Inspectorate will consider appeals based on representations and information supplied with the original application rather than separate written representations.
Ways to Apply
Apply Online
The Planning Portal enables everyone to make planning applications online and this includes applications for works to protected trees. All applications made using this method are automatically received by the Council the following day and are processed in the same way as paper-based applications.
You will need to register with the Planning Portal the first time you use it. Once registered, you will be able to complete applications online and save partially completed applications, which you can return to at a later date. This is particularly useful if you submit applications on a regular basis.
