Ensuring our loos are the best they can be

A review is to take place of the public conveniences owned by East Cambridgeshire District Council and used by residents and visitors in the district.
 
The work will look at how to make the best use of the nine toilets in Ely, Littleport, Burwell and Fordham which currently cost over £200,000 a year to ensure they are fit for purpose for the years ahead.
 
As part of the review, a working group will look at usage of the facilities, compare the district’s toilets with other areas as well as carrying out a cost analysis of improving or refurbishing the conveniences in East Cambridgeshire.
 
The review will take place over the next few months with the final report coming back to Commercial Services committee in July. This work involve consulting with the public and local parish Councils.
 
Councillor Richard Hobbs, Chairman of Commercial Services Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “Over the years we have looked after several public conveniences in the district, allowing residents and visitors to take advantage of our facilities when needed. We are now looking to make sure the toilets are meeting the needs of the public now and in the years ahead. 
 
“Whenever a service is to be reviewed, some people automatically assume it is going to be cut or drastically changed. Let me reassure you that the work we are about to begin aims to get the most out of the significant investment we make in our public conveniences. We want to know how often they are used, which need to be improved and how we compare with our neighbouring authorities. We are entering this process with a completely open mind – we have only one aim to create the best service possible.”
