Children, walkers and visitors to Ely are going to get to have their say on new play equipment to be installed in the city’s County Park.

At Community and Environment Committee, Councillors agreed to invest £150,000 of developers funding to improve facilities, signage and access to the area.

In order to choose the equipment to inspire imaginative and collaborative play, officers will be arranging a consultation with users of the park and local schools to give their views.

This work will take place over the summer, in the meantime picnic benches, rain shelters and cycling parking will be installed as part of Phase Three of the Park’s improvement.

There will also be new signage erected to improve the profile of the park throughout Ely as well as solar lighting fitted to help provide a better link between Sainsburys and the riverside in the early mornings and evenings.

Councillor Richard Hobbs, Chairman of the Community and Environment Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: "Ely’s County Park is developing into a wonderful place becoming ever more popular with families, visitors and walkers looking to enjoy the outdoors. With more and more people using the area, we want to spend the money we have got from developers to improve the range of facilities at the site from installing new play equipment, picnic benches and improved signage.

"When it comes to play, we want the people who use the park to have their say. So rather than a bunch of officials making the decision we will be asking children and families to give their views on the options we can afford. This consultation will take place later this year and we will use the feedback to develop our plans. All our work is aimed at making the County Park a place which allows everyone young and old to enjoy the countryside."
