Work has begun on planting, pruning and removing trees on Ely’s Riverside as part of plans to ensure the area remains a place to relax and enjoy.

Over the last few months, the footpath on Lavender Green has been widened and improved, new duck feeding signs have been introduced and solar lighting installed along the Riverside path to make it safer for people to walk and cycle along the area in the evenings and at night.

The tree work will see a number of old tree stumps and damaged trees removed, as well as replacement trees and flower beds being planted.

The progress being made is thanks to the Ely Riverside Improvement Plan which has been developed between the City of Ely Council, District Council, partners and local groups, in consultation with members of the public.

The final stage will involve repairs to retaining walls, the installation of new benches and the paving of selected areas by the public slipway.

Councillor Richard Hobbs, Chairman of Commercial Services Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “The Ely Riverside Improvement Plan has been met with great enthusiasm since it was launched this summer. The aim has been to enhance Ely’s Riverside so it is no longer seen as the city’s hidden treasure but becomes one of its most popular places to visit. The key has been to include the public, residents and those who use the area in the work we are doing. So even though the weather has turned chilly over recent days as autumn finally takes hold, the area has remained a wonderful place to walk and enjoy.”

Councillor Lis Every, Mayor of Ely, said: “It is important to understand how vital collaboration has been in order to achieve this success we are seeing on the Riverside. At the City Council, we are delighted to have contributed towards the enhancement of this area as an attraction for our local residents and tourists.”

The works are being paid for by the City of Ely Councils S106 public open space funding.
