The town and city centres in East Cambridgeshire are great places to shop, visit and explore and it is all made easier by free car parking.

As part of the promotion of free car parking, new signs have been put up to encourage people to visit Ely, Soham and Littleport

The initiative, to highlight free car parking in the heart of Ely runs along side the new shopping promotion to encourage more people to shop.

The campaign has been funded by using a small portion of the rent the Council received for letting the Post Office use part of the Newnham Street car park in Ely, while they sought a permanent home.

Councillor Bill Hunt, Chairman of Asset Development Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “Our town centres are the hearts of our community. They are the places where people come to meet, to shop and to socialise – this is why we believe it is right to promote the free parking which is available in the centre of these towns. So as we enter festive holidays then why not come to Ely, Littleport and Soham see what there is to do and see then tell your friends about the great things you have done.”

Councillor Hamish Ross, Member for Soham South, said: “Free car parking is very important issue for our local communities – it helps attract people to come to our towns to shop. Without this incentive, many people may miss out on the opportunity to visit some of the amazing places which we have in East Cambridgeshire. So whether it is for shopping, catching up with friends or simply to explore – use our free town centre car parks to facilitate your stay.
