The wheeled bin recycling service in East Cambridgeshire has been praised as an example of good work by Eric Pickles – Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

In a speech to the Recycling & Waste Management Exhibition at the NEC, he referred to East Cambridgeshire’s achievements after the District Council successfully bid for £5 million from Central Government to fund a new recycling service and retain weekly waste collections.

This has seen the district’s recycling rates sour from the 34 per cent just two years ago to projections of a rate of 54 per cent this year.

The wheeled bin recycling service involves:

  • A blue lidded wheeled bin recycling collection, including paper, glass, food & drinks cans, plastic bottles & hard plastic food containers, cartons and cardboard. This will be collected fortnightly.
  • A green lidded wheeled bin collection for garden and food waste. This will also be collected fortnightly.
  • Refuse in black sacks continues to be collected weekly

Cllr Anna Bailey, Chair of Regulatory and Support Services Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “It is really encouraging that the hard work and success of our waste and recycling service has been recognised at a national level. We have seen such a dramatic increase in our recycling levels in such a short time which is down to the easy to use system we have in place and the efforts of our residents who have embraced the new service with such enthusiasm.”
