Ely’s Jubilee Gardens has won a prestigious Green Flag award for sixth year in a row after being highlighted as one of the best parks and green spaces in the country.

Opened in 2002 by Prince Phillip to mark the Queen’s Jubilee, Jubilee Gardens were judged to be welcoming, safe and well maintained, with the strong involvement of the local community.

The award also recognisesthe vast amount of work, dedication and sheer enthusiasm of all the Council Staff, volunteers and local people who have made the park what it is.

The impressive Jubilee Gardens with beautiful riverside setting and magnificent Cathedral backdrop incorporates trees, flowers, sculptures and a bandstand, providing a community facility for a wide variety of outdoor events such as fetes, fairs and open-air concerts.

Councillor Peter Cresswell, Chairman of the Community Services Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “I have been very lucky over the years to attend various events in Jubilee Gardens and no matter the season the park is a joy to behold. So many people gain real pleasure from the Gardens whether they are looking for some where to play, meet up with friends or just relax – it is a credit to huge number of hours which all those who care for the gardens put in.

“With such pedigree and commitment, it really should come as no surprise that this is the sixth year, Jubilee Gardens has won a Green flag and things are set to get even better. Talking to the team, I know there are plans to introduce a winter garden to flourish in the chilly months of the year which I am sure will be spectacular.”
