With admissions up, gift shop sales up and guided tour income up, Oliver Cromwell House in Ely is attracting more visitors than ever to the district.

The House was set ambitious targets last year to increase visitor numbers and income and despite the recession and budgetary restraints more people than ever are visiting the famous site.

The team even won the prestigious best Tourist Information Centre award in the East of England at the regional Enjoy England Awards for Excellence this year.

With exhibition upgrades set to be a priority for the next year, the attraction is looking to confirm it's status as a premier visitor attraction in the region

Councillor Peter Cresswell, Chairman of the Community Services Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “Oliver Cromwell House is one of the jewels in the crown of East Cambridgeshire. Whenever you walk into the building you can feel the history and significance of the House all around you so I was not surprised to see how well the attraction has done.

"In spite of the difficult economic climate, the hard work of the team at the House has paid off with income increasing and the team being rightly recognised for their excellent service at the regional Enjoy England awards. I know the team are far from complacent and will push on next year to improve the venue even further. If you haven't visited the house recently, I would implore you to take a trip and delve into the history of our forefathers."
