Future cricketers, children in search of a play area and anyone using the St Georges Centre in Littleport are among those set to benefit from grants totalling over £120,000.

At Community and Environment Sub Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, Councillors heard how funding had been agreed for the following projects from the East Cambridgeshire Community Facilities (Section 106) Fund:

• Fordham Parish Council will receive £9,600 to help with the design and submission of a planning application for the construction of a new football and cricket pavilion
• Littleport Parish Council will receive funds totalling £42,959 to help pay for work on the car parking and lighting at the St Georges Medical Centre; purchase the redundant toilets on the High Street and upgrade the outdoor play area surfaces at Croft Road and Parsons Lane.
• The City of Ely Council will be using £42,573 to provide a new multi use games area at New Barns Avenue and another £12,900 to help with the upgrade of the Skate Park on St Johns Road
• Chippenham Parish Council will be getting £10,000 to buy new cricket nets to develop junior cricket and help with coaching.
• Aldreth Community Association have received £6,527 to upgrade the outdoor surface of the play area at the Village Centre.

The Community Facilities Fund is there to support projects and schemes throughout the District with money obtained from developers as part of the expansion of East Cambridgeshire.

Councillor Richard Hobbs, Chairman of the Community and Environment Sub-Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “It is always a pleasure to see how local councils across the district are using money obtained from developers to improve the lives of those who live in their community. This month it seems we are helping to ensure we are all fit and active judging from the play area and sporting related grants which were requested but in this Olympic year this is not too surprising. I am sure these projects once completed will prove again that East Cambridgeshire is a great place to live and work.”
