E.coli outbreak from unwashed salad leaves

A strain of E.coli has been identified as being the case behind an current outbreak of illness across the UK. Public Health England has issued some guidance in regards to protecting yourself and your family:

  • Remove any loose soil before storing vegetables and thoroughly wash all vegetables (including salads) that will be eaten raw unless they have been pre-prepared and are specifically labelled ‘ready to eat’.
  • Thoroughly clean your food preparation area in advance of use
  • Wash hands thoroughly using soap and water after using the toilet, before and after handling food and especially after handling raw or unwashed food.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after contact with any animals and pets, including farm animals. Small children should also be supervised when washing their hands.
