Last week over 250 people saw proposals to transform the Ely Station Gateway go on display.

As part of an eight week consultation period running until Friday 21st March, residents and businesses came to see the draft Ely Station Gateway Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) at the former Millets store

The display at the shop on Ely Market Place on Thursday 6th and Saturday 8th March, showed how the gateway could be developed to provide jobs, enhanced transport interchange facilities as well as creating an attractive access to the City.

Cllr Bill Hunt, Lead Member for the Station Gateway project said "Ely is a wonderful city which has developed progressively over the centuries as East Cambridgeshire has grown and developed. For Ely to continue to provide the jobs, opportunities and innovation required by its residents, we must look at how to best utilise the assets which we have. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of Ely so it was great to see so many people come along and give their views to drive forward the prosperity of the city and district for generations to come."

The SPD, once approved, will be a statutory planning document. The draft proposals currently include:

  • A minimum of 800 jobs
  • A new public transport interchange at the railway station.
  • Small retail units, linked to the redevelopment of the railway interchange.
  • Approximately 400 residential units.
  • Public open space
  • Car parking for occupiers/users of the site and for the railway station.
