With its world famous Cathedral, renown independent shops and beautiful riverside, Ely is revered across the region - now visitors and shoppers are being reminded they can park for free in the city centre to enjoy the experience.

A new promotion of the free parking in Ely's city centre is set to begin in time for Christmas, funded by part of the rent paid by the Post Office while they had temporary facilities in Newnham Street Car Park.

The promotion will involve an advertising campaign across the region, new signage across the city and new signs on the gateway roads into Ely.

Councillor Bill Hunt, Chairman of Asset Development Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: "Ely is famous across the country for its magnificent Cathedral, Oliver Cromwell House and range of monastic buildings, there is also the picturesque Riverside and the chance to shop in some wonderful independent shops. We are rightly proud of all these things and even more so that people can come and park for free in our city centre car parks to experience them.

"By offering free parking in the heart of our city, we are making it very clear that Ely and East Cambridgeshire is open for business. In contrast to other areas, we are committed to keeping the car parks in Ely's city centre free. A day does not go by when I am not asked by a visitor where the ticket machine for the car park is and they are always shocked when I tell them you can park for free in Ely. So let's get the word out that visitors and shoppers are welcome in Ely and you can come and park in our city free of charge."
