At Thursday's (12 August) Community Services Committee, members will be asked to review a number of developments which have been made since their last meeting. This includes:

  • the progress towards identifying possible budget savings
  • how discussions have progressed with the City of Ely and Soham Town Councils to provide the localised service
  • how  possible enhancements to the current camera technology could  improve the service
  • to instruct the Chief Executive to move forward with the record option for  implementation

The move to look again at the discretionary CCTV service delivered by the District Council followed calls from city and town councils to devolve powers to them and the intense budgetary challenges facing the authority.

Councillor Peter Cresswell, Chairman of Community Services Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: "As everyone is aware we live in very difficult financial conditions at present. Local authorities are facing tough decisions regarding the services which they provide to the public and unfortunately we are no different in East Cambridgeshire.

"Looking at the progress which has been made since our last meeting, I believe the decision to investigate the record only option was one that had to be made. We have had initial discussions with both the City of Ely and Soham Town Councils who have expressed interest in delivering
the service at a local level. As we look to move forward with developing a new service, it is important that we do so not only in partnership but with public safety as our clear priority."
