As budgetary pressures increase and the authority receives more requests from city and town councils to devolve powers to them, East Cambridgeshire District Council is looking again at the best way to deliver CCTV in the district.
At Community Services Committee on Monday 5 July, members will be asked to review a number of options for the discretionary service from maintaining the status quo to bringing in a recorded system or withdrawing the service all together.
As part of the review, officers will report back on the financial implications of the various options and set up a time scale for the decision to be made.
Councillor Peter Cresswell, Chairman of Community Services Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “These are incredibly difficult times for all Councils and we have to be very mindful of both our financial and community responsibilities. While we cannot write blank cheques to pay for CCTV, we cannot simply disregard systems which will protect us all.
“All members will approach our meeting next week with a lot to discuss and debate. Currently officers are recommending we look seriously at an option which would introduce a record system as it would clearly allow us to find efficiency savings but also open up the system to local delivery through city and town councils. This is clearly a credible alternative to our current system but it will be up to members to make the final decision.”
