Registering to Vote

You must be:

Citizens of European Union member states other than UK or the Irish Republic are only eligible to vote in local government elections.

If you are not a British or Irish Republic citizen you must fill in a separate vote form to vote in European Parliamentary elections.

You can only vote in elections if your name is on the register of electors for our district. We update the register in October each year. However, we can add entries throughout the year. So if you have recently moved to your current address and are eligible to be registered we can add your name to the register. You need to complete a registration form, which can be downloaded from here, and post it to Electoral Services at the Council offices.  One Rolling Registration form will be needed for EACH eligible elector.

Credit reference agencies also obtain the electoral register to confirm the residency of people, so this may be another reason for you to ensure you are registered to vote.

How long does it take for new details to get on the electoral register?

New arrangements now mean that once you have registered we will add your name to the register within seven weeks of your application.

The list is updated at the beginning of most months and your details will take between two to seven weeks to be updated, depending on when you register them.

Change of Details

Change of Address

You need to fill in a Rolling Registration form, downloaded from the Council's website or by ringing 01353 665555.

Post the completed form back to us, we can then amend our Electoral Register and your details will appear on the next monthly update.

You must inform us of any change of address if you wish to keep your vote.  Even if you have contacted another department e.g. Council Tax, you still need to update your electoral records is by filling in a rolling registration form.

Change of Name

If your name has changed you are welcome to use the Rolling Registration form, or the annual registration form, to update the register.

Otherwise you will be registered under your old name.

In both cases, you will need to complete a separate form for EACH person who is registered and whose details have changed. You need separate forms for each person 18 years old and over (and every person just under 18). Each of them will have to sign their own form.

Please Note: the Rolling Registration form should NOT be used mid-August to end November. Your details will be picked up when you fill in the Annual Registration form sent to your new home during this period.

Rolling Registration Form - Other Languages

You can complete one of our rolling registration forms, which will let us add your name to the electoral register for this district. You must fill in and sign the form yourself. If anyone else in your house is eligible to vote they must fill in a separate form. We provide this form in several languages - please select the appropriate form from the rolling registration forms page.

Obtaining a copy of the Electoral Register

Anyone can purchase an edited version of the Electoral Register and they can be supplied in either data or printed forms.

Please contact Electoral Services who can work out how much the Register will cost (it is based on a set fee plus extra costs depending on the number of entries in the Register).

The Register supplied will only be the 'Edited' version, not the full version. This version excludes all the electors who have chosen to 'opt out' and not have their details published in this version. The full version can only be purchased by particular organisations specified under law, such as Government departments or credit reference agencies.
