Food hygiene rating scheme

Eating out? Getting food in? Check food.gov.uk/ratings

The food hygiene rating given to a business reflects the food hygiene standards found at the time of the inspection by local authority food officers. Most businesses that sell or offer food are included in the scheme, but some are not, such as manufacturers and processors, as well as low risk premises which only sell pre-wrapped confectionery.

Food Business Registration

All premises used for a food business are required by law to be registered. This includes market stalls, delivery vehicles and other mobile food premises. Registration allows local authorities to keep an up-to-date list of all those premises in their area so they can visit them when they need to. Application for registration should be made by food business operators in respect of new food business establishments at least 28 days before commencing food operations.

Safer Food Better Business

It is a legal requirement that all food businesses have a documented food safety management system. It should be kept up-to-date and be available for officers to inspect during inspections. Failure to have a documented food safety management system will result in a lower food hygiene rating.

Safer Food, Better Business (SFBB) is a free resource published and updated by the Food Standards Agency. By working through the document, and completing the relevant sections, a food business should have a robust food hygiene management system.
